The Dugout Pros “Weighted OBR™ Formula” Breakdown
At Dugout Pros, we don’t just sell used gear & connect with the community; we certify gear & bat performance so our customers keep coming back. This proprietary diagnostic is why players and parents trust our used baseball bats more than any other seller in the industry.
To take the guesswork out of buying used gear, every bat at Dugout Pros undergoes a rigorous 15-point inspection. We score three core areas, BPR, BCR and BGR on a 5-point scale. To calculate a final OBR™ (Overall Bat Rating) out of 10, we must give our rating categories a weighted score out of 1. Based on the 5-point scale ratings of each category for the bat, we then multiple the rating by our weighted scale. The weighted scale will then be added up and multiplied by 2 to give us a final OBR™ (Overall Bat Rating) out of 10. The weighted OBR scale prioritizes BPR at .55, BCR at .35% and BGR at 10%.
The Dugout Pros OBR Formula
Weighted OBR Formula = (((BPR x 0.55) + (BCR x 0.35) + (BGR x 0.1)) x 2) to get your Final OBR out of 10
- BPR™ (Barrel Performance Rating): Integrity check to ensure the "pop", “pings” and trampoline effect off the bat are game-ready. At Dugout Pros, we believe barrel performance is most important when shopping for a used bat. That’s why we gave BPR a weighted score of .55/1.
-
BCR™ (Barrel Condition Rating): Visual assessment of chips, scratches, bag wear, cleat wear, spider cracking, barrel wobble and internal rattles. When choosing your used bat, barrel condition comes second. Dugout Pros gives BCR a weighted score of .35/1.
- Pro Tip: Visual flaws can deceive shoppers into thinking that the bat no longer performs well. Check our BPR Rating to double check!
- BGR™ (Bat Grip Rating): Evaluation of handle tackiness and wrap quality. Grips are a big part of a bat for players. For used bats, a worn grip doesn’t mean a bats life is up. A bat will often go thru 3-4 re-grippings throughout its life span. Dugout Pros has but it’s weighted score at 0.1/1 due to the ease of replacing bats grip without it affecting the bats performance or overall condition.
1. Dugout Pros BPR™ (Barrel Performance Rating)
Our proprietary scale based on professional field-testing of every bat in our inventory.
| RATING | RATING NAME | PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION (THE "POP") |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Peak Performance | Exhibits maximum exit velocity and "trampoline effect." Barrel is fully responsive across the entire hitting surface. |
| 4 | High Output | Strong, consistent energy transfer. Ball jumps off the barrel with excellent carry and sound. |
| 3 | Standard | Reliable performance consistent with original manufacturer specs. Solid feedback on contact with no noticeable drop in pop. |
| 2 | Limited Response | Reduced energy transfer; requires more effort for distance. Ideal for high-volume training or "cage" use. |
| 1 | Stiff / No-Pop | Minimal barrel flex or "dead" feel. Primarily recommended for tee work or heavy-ball strength training. |
2. Dugout Pros BCR™ (Barrel Condition Rating)
The BCR™ is a visual-only assessment of the bat's exterior. While our Performance Rating (BPR) measures the "pop" inside the barrel, the BCR™ tells you exactly how the bat looks to the naked eye.
| RATING | RATING NAME | VISUAL DESCRIPTION |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Showroom Mint | Flawless exterior condition. No paint chips, scratches, or "bag wear." The bat looks as though it just came out of the original wrapper. |
| 4 | Excellent | Very clean aesthetic. The barrel may have a few minor surface chips/scratches or faint ball marks from light use, but there is no significant paint loss. |
| 3 | Average Use | Visible paint chips and "bag wear" (scratches from contact with fences or other gear). These are purely cosmetic flaws that have zero impact on structural integrity. |
| 2 | Heavy Use | Heavy cosmetic wear. Noticeable paint chipping, scuffing, spider cracks, barrel wobble or fading. Ideal for performance-first players. |
| 1 | Battle Scarred | Significant deep scratches, end-cap scuffing, barrel wobble, and heavily faded graphics. Functionally sound but shows extreme signs of high use. Recommended for practice. |
3. Dugout Pros BGR™ (Bat Grip Rating)
Our BGR™ (Bat Grip Rating) evaluates the grips tackiness, texture, and hygiene. Because grips are a replaceable part of the bat, we rate them separately to ensure full transparency.
| RATING | RATING NAME | GRIP CONDITION & FEEL |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Factory New | Original factory grip or brand-new replacement. Indicates 100% tackiness with zero signs of previous use. |
| 4 | Light Use | Excellent traction and feel. Minor cosmetic fading possible, but grip retains high-level stick with no peeling or smooth spots. |
| 3 | Standard / Seasoned | Typical signs of play. Traction is fully functional, but the "new" feel has worn off. No immediate replacement necessary. |
| 2 | Worn / Smooth | Noticeable loss of tackiness. Grip may feel slick or dry. Suitable for practice; fresh wrap recommended for competitive play. |
| 1 | Replacement Required | Significant peeling, flaking, or structural wear. Suggest adding a new grip to ensure proper safety and vibration dampening. |
Pro tip: Year-round players often need a new grip every 1-3 months. Recreational players can go 1+ year.
