Used Baseball Bats Vs. New Baseball Bats

At Dugout Pros, there’s nothing more important to us than getting a bat in a players hand that fits there height, length and weight-drop needs. Parents and players ask us all the time, does it matter if we buy a used baseball bat over a new baseball bat? We explain the benefits and drawbacks of each.

  • Used Baseball Bats: Used baseball bats are becoming increasingly popular amongst the young community. The reason being is because of the requirements that leagues have and the price tag of new bats. Purchasing a used bat is sensible and not as stressful as dropping a paycheck on a single bat. Throughout a kids career, age 5 to age 17,  a single player will own an average of 10 to 15 bats.
    • Many young players feel the need to purchase a new bat when entering a new league due to league requirements and belief that they will hit better. The truth is, at young ages, players do not need a new bat for every league or season they enter. The only way a player will hit better is by practicing their mechanics and honing in on their skills. An average player plays in five different leagues throughout their youth career. Meaning, they will need five different bats for each league to obey by bat weight and bat regulations. This does not count players going through growth spurts. New bats costs a pretty penny over the years and dent your wallet. You’ll thank yourself later for buying used bats.
    • If you play youth competitive elite travel baseball, a new bat is justified. As players reach the later half of their travel ball career, a new bat helps significantly due to the increased chances of a college scouts being present.
  • New Baseball Bats: Every baseball manufacturer comes out with new versions and technologies around their bat lines. Brands such as Easton, DeMarini and Rawlings are leading the bat world in batting technology. New tech eliminates hand vibrations and maximize the sweet spot. Players should feel and use the bat of preference first before purchasing it new.
    • New bats are great for experienced youth players that have specific preferences and know what they like and dislike in a bat. Many player who purchase new are looking for a high-performing bat because performance matters at a higher level of play, especially when a player is looking to play college ball.
    • A great choice to purchase a new bat is when a player is starting high school. This will ensure the player gets three to four seasons out of his or her new bat. The performance of the bat will be up to date and confidence will be at peak. Just be careful not to let teammates use your new bat, as the lifespan of your new bat will significantly diminish.

Many players moving up to the big field feel the need to get a new bat to keep up with social status on the field and because they feel that it would give them an edge when hitting the ball.

We are a great alternative for a player wanting to buy a new $400 bat, is opting for a used bat with comparable technology, at a fraction of the cost. Not only a smart choice, but a prudent decision for players who struggle to swing. Dugout Pros urges players who struggle with bat weight to develop their bodies first before buying a new bat. Any bat, new or used, will perform better with proper swing mechanics and a more powerful swing; because of that, players should develop their bodies first in order to achieve this. Once a player has developed their body to achieve proper swing mechanics, then a new bat is recommended. There are loads of legendary bats out there that have been forgotten about yet perform just as good if not better than many new bats on the market.
